Sign of the times: location chosen via social media.
By virtue of an informal election held on the So Cal Carvers group on Facebook, September’s Last Saturday of the Month Ride in Southern California will carve up the Newport Beach Back Bay Loop Trail, an 11-mile route in one of Orange County’s premier recreational and environmental regions.
Although a small group of OC carvers held their own LSM Ride last month, this represents the first time the county south of Los Angeles is the primary LSM location for the region that invented what is now a global LSM Trikke Ride movement.
Whereas most So Cal LSMs have been held in Long Beach or the South Bay — the two locations of event sponsors TrikkeWorld Magazine and SouthBay Trikke — the 2011 September LSM began what TWM publisher Randy Boyd hopes will become a local tradition.
“An out-of-the-box idea was born to hold that LSM in Ventura County, where we went from the Mountains to the Sea, the subtitle for the ride,” says Boyd. “This year, I thought, why not put it to a vote?”
The winner: nature preserves, marine life, and scenic views of mountains and seas. The Newport Beach Back Bay is a treasured trail first discovered by So Cal carvers when Trikke Trainer Lisa Hoolihan hosted a ride there in July, 2011.
Now the trail is an election winner.

9:30 am – group photo ops
10:00 am – ride begins (usually until 1-2:00 pm).
- All levels of Trikke riders welcomed. Bikes also welcomed.
- You DO NOT have to be a member of So Cal Carvers to participate.
- Total Ride Route: 11 miles.
- Optional “easy riders” turnaround spot: 3.15 miles and back, for a total of 6.3 total miles.
- Post-ride meal at a nearby location (optional).
