On Sunday October 7th, the city of Santa Cruz in Northern California held it’s first Open Streets event on a two-mile, car-free stretch of scenic West Cliff Drive. As residents, it was an event my wife Sally and I couldn’t pass up.
We’ve participated in Sunday Streets San Francisco since 2009, with and without fellow Trikke riders, so it was great
not to have to get up and drive an hour and a half north to ride on streets without cars. Sally had an earlier meeting with some of her surfing friends, so I rode to the event alone and met her there a bit later.
The oceanside route went from Lighthouse Point to Natural Bridges, with all kinds of activities along the way (Garmin report here). The music from the video is by a local group, Flor de Cana. One of the most interactive activities along the way was a Zumba class. A good turnout of folks with lots of enthusiasm ensured that this will be an event duplicated again and again. Hopefully we will be able to attract some other Trikke riders to participate.
